OK, folks, we’re almost ready to get started. Before we do though, I want to provide you with some general guidelines that will hopefully improve the quality of our comments, while at the same time preventing any misunderstandings:) Below are some basic guidelines that should guide each post that you make throughout the class. Please read this carefully. If you need to refer back to it, I have attached a link entitled “Online Discussion Guidelines” in the “links” section.
Remember- each time that you comment, you should do so in character. This should guide how you think about issues as well as how you respond to the prompts!
Online Discussion Guidelines There are 3 areas that I want you to focus on as you take part in our various online discussions and forums. Remember, your thoughts are on display for the whole world to see. You need to take pride in your work. Spelling and mechanics do count. If people cannot understand what you’re trying to say, your message is lost. As you create each post please be mindful of the following:
I. Thoughtfulness- Comments should specifically state the issue that you are responding to, what your response is, and, when appropriate, identify the person who is being responded to.
II. Concrete Examples- If you are going to put forth an idea, make sure that you have concrete reasons/evidence to support it. This is what gives strength to your writing.
III. Participate- Each student is expected to respond at least once to every post. Providing questions and thoughts that move the discussion forward is always encouraged.
In short-
a. Have an opinion...
b. Tell why......
c . Provide specific evidence to support your reasons with specific examples (evidence!)
Thanks for your enthusiasm. Enjoy the ride as we learn from one another!
